Israel and U.S. officials predict Iran's retaliation for Syria consulate bombing

In recent developments, Israel and the U.S. are on high alert, believing that Iran is planning to retaliate for an Israeli strike on an Iranian consulate in Syria. The strike, which occurred on Monday, resulted in the deaths of several senior leaders of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, as confirmed by the Pentagon.

U.S. officials have received intelligence suggesting that Iran may launch a retaliatory attack using Shaheed loitering drones and cruise missiles. The target and timing of the potential attack remain unknown, but it is believed to be in response to the Damascus strike and could potentially target an Israeli diplomatic facility before the end of Ramadan next week.

Following the funeral in Tehran for the IRGC members killed in the Damascus strike, Gen. Hossein Salami warned that Israel would face consequences for assassinating Iranian military officers. However, he did not provide specific details on how or when Iran might retaliate.

In response to the escalating tensions, the Biden administration has emphasized that the U.S. had no prior knowledge of the Israeli strike and has pledged support to Israel in defending against threats from Iran. The possibility of a regional war looms as Israel has publicly stated its intention to retaliate if attacked by Iran.
